Stem Cell-Mediated Angiogenesis in Skin TissueStaphylococcus aureus skin colonization promotes SLE-like autoimmune inflammation via neutrophil activation and the IL-23/IL-17 axis Engineering and Wound Healing
A new Science Immunology study in mice finds that colonization with S. aureus on the skin worsens systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) by affecting neutrophil behavior.

Stem Cell-Mediated Angiogenesis in Skin Tissue Engineering and Wound Healing
Certain conditions (e.g., hypoxic environments) has been known to boost the pro-angiogenic capability of stem cells. For skin tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications, pro-angiogenic stem cells has shown promise for accelerating healing of acute and chronic skin wounds.

EGFR-mediated epidermal stem cell motility drives skin regeneration through COL17A1 proteolysis
Researchers from Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) have found that the ability of skin stem cells to heal wounds is linked with their ability to move towards the injury. Their study identified the signalling pathway of EGFR and COL17A1 as a key player in the regulation of motility. Understanding mechanisms that underlie the age-associated reduction in regenerative capacity is the first step to develop targeted treatments for age-associated chronic nonhealing disorders, such as diabetic ulcers.

3D cell sheet structure augments mesenchymal stem cell cytokine production
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) secrete paracrine factors that play crucial roles during tissue regeneration. An increasing body of evidence suggests that this paracrine function is enhanced by MSC cultivation in three-dimensional (3D) tissue-like microenvironments.

Key Factor in Skin (and Hair) Regeneration
Baby-like skin again? A newly identified genetic factor in developing fibroblasts allows adult skin to self-repair, much like the skin of a newborn baby. The discovery by Washington State University researchers has implications for better skin wound treatment, as well as supporting hair follicle formation and preventing some of the aging processes in skin.
